When Should I Plant My Garden in Zone 11?
Since Zone 11 rarely sees any freezes, you can replant multiple times a year in what is often called a “second summer” growing phase. This can be done through succession planting, just see which plants will fare best in the hotter months in comparison to the cooler ones! Some cold-loving plants will certainly struggle in Zone 11, especially if planted in the summer. In many other Zones, plants must always be started indoors, and there is a small window of time that plants need to be planted during. In Zone 11, however, those precautions aren’t as necessary. Just pay attention to what months plants prefer to be planted at, and you don’t have to stress about potential sneaky frosts killing them!
While many gardeners fret about the frosts freezing and killing their harvests, Zone 11 has the opposite issue to worry about. Too much heat can fry some plants, especially if they don’t get constant water. There are a few ways to combat extreme heat, one of which is installing a drip water system. Watering tools that help you keep your plants moist and happy can go a long way in ensuring that they don’t get too dry. To prevent the soil from getting too hot, you can implement mulches to fight off the sun’s intense rays. Shade cloths are helpful in the most extreme situations, however they have to be used with some consideration as they also block some of the sunlight from your plants.
