Neoregelia Bromeliad Care Guide

Bromeliad Neoregelia

Neoregelia Bromeliad: Overview

The Neoregelia Bromeliad is a compact plant that stays short and grows more in width than height. Like other bromeliad plants, most Neoregelia Bromeliad varieties have leaves growing in rosettes with the uppermost leaves colored red or purple. The flowers are small and can be purple, blue, white, and more. The Bromeliad Neoregelia is one of the smaller bromeliads, growing only about 8 inches wide and 16 inches tall.

Bromeliads are part of the Bromeliaceae family. These gorgeous plants are native to the South American rainforests, usually growing on top of trees. Many bromeliads are epiphytes that use their roots to attach to other plants and trees, receiving most of their nutrients from the rain and air. As tropical plants, bromeliads thrive in warm climate zones, where night temperatures are above 60°F. You can even grow them outdoors as stunning plants for your porch.

Bromeliads have a unique life cycle; the plant matures for several years and then blooms. While it only blooms once during its lifecycle, the flower spikes last for 3 to 6 months. Once the flower wilts, the bromeliad plant starts forming pups (offshoots) that you can propagate into new plants. Neoregelia Bromeliads lives for 3-4 years.

To flourish, most bromeliads need bright indirect sunlight, and Neoregelia is no exception. They are easy to care for and are perfect beginner plants. Moreover, bromeliads are pet-friendly plants as they do not contain any toxins that can harm cats or dogs. Bromeliads are associated with love and happiness and are also a symbol of protection.

Bromeliad Neoregelia: Care Guide

The glamorous Neoregelia is a low-maintenance and drought-tolerant plant. Here are some helpful tips on how to care for Bromeliad Neoregelia:

Watering Humidity

Bromeliads don’t need a lot of water. Water sparingly, when the soil is dry completely. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so don’t allow water to collect in the pot’s tray. Your Bromeliad Neoregelia will respond well to misting since it prefers high humidity.

Light and Temperature

Bromeliads require at least six hours of bright, indirect sunlight daily. These tropical beauties also prefer warm temperatures, ranging from 60°F to 80°F. Neoregelia Bromeliad can tolerate lower temperatures up to 40°F.

Soil, Repotting, and Feeding

Bromeliad Neoregelia prefers well-draining soil, containing regular potting mix, perlite, and orchid bark for enhanced drainage. Feed the plant every other month in the growing season with a slow-release fertilizer that is low in nitrogen. Generally, you wouldn’t need to repot your Bromeliad right away. Transplant it when it outgrows its container. Use a pot that is 2 inches larger than the previous one. The ideal pot for Bromeliads should have a sufficient number of drainage holes.

Propagation

When your Bromeliad has finished flowering, you’ll notice that it starts to wilt. During this stage, the plant will produce pups that you can use to propagate your Neo Bromeliad. Let them grow on their mother plant until they are about 5 inches tall. Then, you can divide them from the wilting mother plant by gently pulling them away from the stalk. Use pruners if necessary to detach them. Simply plant the pups with newly formed roots in well-draining soil mixed with perlite and orchid bark and watch them grow into new Bromeliad plants!

Pruning, Cleaning, and Common Issues

Prune away any damaged leaves to the base. Clean the debris from the soil. While wilting leaves are part of the natural bromeliad lifecycle, prematurely yellowing and browning leaves can be a sign of overwatering or underwatering. In addition, crisp brown spots on the leaves show that your plant is getting too much direct sunlight. Simply move it to a place with bright but indirect light.

    So pretty

So much prettier in person! I have had it about 5 months. I think I may have over watered it but it’s hanging in there!

    WOWZIE

I received this plant from Petco as a condolence gift for my cat passing as I had to cancel a subscription service. It is absolutely breath taking! It was packaged so carefully with this cloth "dirt bag" and even the little planter it came with is beautiful. What a thoughtful gift that will bring sweet memories of my gone but never forgotten fur baby for many many years. I don't know what kind of partnership this company has with Petco, or if Petco is just a loyal customer, but this is beyond amazing and completely changed the mood of my day! Thank you, Lively Root, for your part in this incredible bittersweet moment ❤️

    Stunning!

I signed up for the pet friendly subscription and this Bromeliad Neoregelia was my first plant! Unfortunately, the box arrived a little janky (like it had maybe taken a tumble somewhere along the way) causing my Bromeliad Neoregelia to shift at an odd angle in the box, resulting in two damaged leaves and about half of the potting mix coming up and out into the (thankfully!) well-secured dirt bag. However! Because of how well packaged the plant was the damage was minimal, and now this spunky lovely resting in her forever home.

Despite the slight damage from shipment the plant is gorgeous and in exceptional health, which is a testament to the quality care the plant received before being shipped. Pictures just cannot capture how beautifully rich the saturated colors are on the leaves. This is a plant that I wouldn’t have normally picked for myself, but she's perfect and I am delighted to have her in my home. I named her Brunhilde and she’s already been quite the conversation started for the few folks who have seen her.

    Pokey

This plant is very pokey! I have never seen this beauty in real life until now. It's extremely unique and already has a new flower blossoming in the center. My cat loves rubbing his face on her leaves.

    Gorgeous plants

I bought this for myself. It’s beautiful. This is the 3rd or 4th that I’ve purchased from Lively Root. So happy with their plants.
