Plant Bio

Rhapis excelsa, commonly known as Broadleaf Lady Palm or Bamboo Palm, is a member of the Rhapis genus.  It is native to Southern China and Taiwan; however, it is not known to grow in the wild.  It is a cultivated species.

Lady Palms can grow up to 12 feet high with stems up to 1 inch or so in diameter.  They have glossy evergreen leaves with saw-toothed ends.

Fun Facts

Rhapis excelsa have been used as classic ornamental palms for more than 300 years.

They were cultivated by the Japanese elite in the early 1600s, introduced to Europe in 1774, and became prized American "parlor palms" during the 1850s.
