The Philodendron Green Cordatum (Philodendron cordatum 'Green') is a vining plant with emerald green, heart-shaped leaves. In addition to underground roots, this plant has aerial roots that help it climb. This makes it perfect for training up a moss pole or growing as a cascading plant in a hanging basket. Suitable for hardiness zones 9 to 11, the Philodendron Cordatum can grow outdoors as a porch plant if temperatures are above 59°F.
The Philo Cordatum plant is native to Central America and the Caribbean islands. In its natural habitat, this tropical vine often climbs trees, which explains why its name translates as “tree-loving” in Greek, from Greek Philo “love” and dendron “tree.” Cordatum, on the other hand, comes from the Latin word for 'heart-shaped,' referring to its leaves.
This tropical plant loves bright, indirect sunlight and is easy to grow if given sufficient attention. However, the Green Philodendron is toxic to pets, as it can cause irritation and swelling if ingested.
Because of the shape of its leaves, which resemble hearts, the Philodendron Cordatum is a symbol of love and affection, which makes it a great gift plant for those you love.
Many Philodendron plants have striking glossy green or variegated leaves, like the gorgeously speckled White Princess Philodendron or the glossy green-gold striped Philodendron Birkin Plant.
Caring for Philodendron Cordatum isn’t too difficult if you meet this plant’s basic needs. Keep your Philodendron green and lush by following our care tips:
Water your plant thoroughly until the water starts flowing from the pot’s drainage holes. Let it drain, and then replace your plant in its decorative pot. Allow the top inches of the soil to dry before you water again. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. For the best Philodendron Cordatum care, use filtered or distilled water. Alternatively, let tap water sit for 24 hours before watering to make sure that any chlorine or other harmful chemicals have had time to evaporate.
Bright but indirect light is ideal for your Cordatum Philodendron. Outdoors, keep it away from direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn. Your plant needs about 4 to 6 hours of bright sunlight to thrive. It prefers warm temperatures, from 65℉ to 90℉, so avoid placing it in cold drafts.
Because of its tropical rainforest origins, the Cordatum plant appreciates humid surroundings. To increase humidity, place your plant on a pebble tray, mist it daily, and group it with other houseplants.
The perfect soil for your Philodendron cordatum would contain a mix of well-draining potting soil, peat moss, and perlite for enhanced root aeration and drainage. Feed your Green Philo with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted at quarter strength during the growing season. Repot when your plant gets rootbound, and you see roots growing from the pot’s drainage holes. Use a 2-inch larger container with drainage holes.
You can propagate your Philodendron Green Cordatum by taking cuttings from the mature plant. Plant these in moist soil, covering them with a transparent plastic bag to increase humidity. Alternatively, you can root the cuttings in a jar filled with water in a warm location. Change the water regularly and plant the cuttings when they’ve developed sufficiently large roots.
Remove any yellowing or dead leaves from your plant. If left to its own devices, the Green Philodendron grows into a relatively large plant with long vines. Prune it regularly to keep your vine bushy and compact.
Dark brown spots on your plant’s leaves often indicate underwatering or lack of humidity. Too much direct sunlight can also cause crisp brown burns on your Philodendron’s leaves. Yellowing, soft leaves are a signal of overwatering.
The cascading Cordatum Philodendron is a perfect indoor plant that will provide a lush, tropical flair to your living space with its vibrant, glossy leaves.
